Spring Onion 'Red'

Allium fistulosum

These brilliant-crimson bulbs are rich in antioxidants. Harvest when young for maximum colour, or leave until they grow into bulbs that can be used like shallots. Visually interesting, use the green stems as you would other spring onions.

Spring Onion 'Red'

The Queen of all spring onions, this one is versatile and delicious. The brilliant crimson bulbs can be left to mature and used like a shallot, or if eaten young, the entire plant can be sliced and used to garnish stir-fries, salads and your own version of nasi goreng. The brilliant crimson bulbs are also rich in antioxidants. Spring onions are undeniably the most versatile onion in the garden, and a must for the home chef.
How to grow

All onions require rich, well drained soil. Onion seed can be sown directly into the garden, however many gardeners find it more effective to sow into punnets and transplant. Plant in full sun and enrich the soil with compost, well-rotted manure and dolomite prior to planting. Make a shallow trench to 5cm and lie seedlings across the trench so that the roots are at the base. Backfill and water well. Plants will stand up within a week. Mulch well and keep weed free. Harvest when required. If you don't want to disturb the soil, the green tops can be cut and the bulb will produce additional leaves for a second harvest.
